Can turf be laid at any time of the year?
Yes, the only time when it is not possible is when the ground is frozen
Can I buy turf, which is not Q Lawns?
Not from this website, when researching for prices, make sure your turf supplier is a member of TGA (Turfgrass Growers Association)
What’s TGA?
It is a group of turf growers who have the consumer’s best interest within their organization.
How do I know a TGA growers does what they should?
Ask the grower to post you an up to date ‘TGA Certificate of Turf Characteristics’, this will advise you of the quality before you buy, in accordance with the TGA standards for quality.
Is all turf growers' turf the same?
It is similar, but not the same. Be careful, when phoning round for quotes, be sure to get a price, which is for a square metre. Some non-TGA growers charge a square metre price for a square yard or a half square yard (a square yard is 20% smaller than a square metre).
Does the soil type from a grower need to be the same as my own?
Not at all, turf is a mat of living grass plants; the soil is only the carrier in the same way as soil from a pot plant is. The turfs characteristics will depend on your soil, poor soil in your garden will need more feeding for the lawn.
What is Q Lawn grade?
It is a Ryegrass and Fescue mix, which is ideal for most applications
Is Q Lawn grade hardwearing?
Yes, it also has smooth stalk grasses, which give the lawn an element of self-repair
Can Q Lawn be used in the shade?
Be careful here, plants need sunshine to photosynthesise, it depends on how much shade you have. To see if grass will grow in your shady area, only buy one or two square metres of turf and try it before you buy enough to do the whole garden.
What if turf doesn’t grow in the shade?
We suggest you purchase grass seed containing woodland grasses like Tufted hairgrass or RTF turf
What other type of turf is available?
RTF turf (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) this is a blend of NEW grasses and is expected to be available later in the year. It is good for shady gardens
What is bowling green turf?
What the trade call a fescue bent mix - is used for bowling and putting greens. It requires a high input of management and not commonly used for domestic lawns. It is not available from Q Lawns.
Why should I buy Q Lawns turf and not someone else’s?
You can buy any turf, which has a quality standard and produced by a professional company with good after sales service.
Is Q Lawns turf guaranteed?
No, due to the variables that can happen to a living product from when it is delivered to you.
What can go wrong?
Grass is quite difficult to kill, once the turf has rooted, it is then a lawn, responsibility back to the grower would be difficult to establish.
Are there any diseases to be aware of?
There are many and we would suggest further reading on this topic. Our farm has hundreds of acres of lawns. When it is harvested, the roots are cut off; the grass is rolled up, put in a lorry and taken to your garden. This puts stress on the grass plants. Like us, stress encourages illness. However, 99.9% of turf establishes into lawns to be proud of.
Is it easily available?
Q Lawns turf is very popular and available in hundreds of retail outlets. It is grown on stone free, natural organic soils which are rich in nutrients. It looks good
When would it be delivered?
Normally next day if Q Lawns growers have the order before 11am, if not within 48 hours.
Do I need to lay the turf straight away?
Most certainly YES, failure to lay and water turf immediately will result in the turf going yellow, putting un-necessary stress on the plant.
How much water do I need?
Depends on your garden size, turf must be kept moist, but not saturated, any signs of shrinkage, water immediately.
How much does water cost?
To apply 25mm (1 inch) of water to a 100 square metre newly laid lawn you need 2.5m 3 of water – this will cost around £2.22 based in 1m 3 costing 89p
