Robert Laycock is an agronomist and turfgrass scientist operating in the UK from an East Yorkshire base. He began research work on close-mown turf in 1974 while studying for an M.Sc. degree at Imperial College, London. Since then he has had a wide-ranging career involving different aspects of turf research and agronomy, bringing an unrivalled breadth of experience to his practice.

STRI is an international centre of excellence for the turfgrass and amenity industry sector. It is an independent organisation undertaking research for the UK’s main sports governing bodies. It is a member of the Association of Independent Research and Technology Organisations (AIRTO) and an officially recognised testing station for pesticide efficacy under EC directive 93/71/EEC. STRI is also the UK’s recognised authority for the testing of turfgrass for the sports and amenity market and produces guidance for users in its annually produced ‘Turfgrass Seed’ booklet.

Formed in 1995, it comprises some 60 companies (including affiliates), collectively responsible for producing approximately 70 per cent of the cultivated turf grown in the British Isles and supplying specialist knowledge and infrastructure to that industry.

Recently it has widened its scope of activities and has been involved in discussions with Government departments, water companies and other related bodies about the impact of water restrictions on the turf industry. The TGA has also been on the steering group of the 'Greening the Games' committee which is playing an important role in making sure the landscaping aspects of the 2012 Olympic Games are properly recognised by organisers and contractors.
